Embracing tech to increase your income
What is the market like in your area?
What aspects of the real estate journey are presenting the biggest challenges right now?
We'd love to hear from you. All feedback will stay confidential, but will help ensure our future tips and guides are as timely and useful as possible.
Our goal is to help you thrive and succeed in today's market environment.
On that note, I want to share some tips around a subject that often comes up when I visit real estate offices:
Technology Discomfort
Real estate is a gig where it pays to have a certain comfort level with tech. While it is still a face-to-face business at the end of the day, we can leverage our time and effectiveness by understanding and embracing tools that allow us to promote listings effectively, understand the local market and communicate with large numbers of potential clients.
For many salespeople though, the prevalence of tech in real estate becomes a daunting barrier to success. When we are surrounded by tools we don't yet understand, it's easy to get defensive and shut ourselves off from the possibility and potential those tools can bring to our business.
I've met so many agents who are exceptional face-to-face, but struggle to generate enough listing opportunities. The common thread among this group is usually a lack of databasing and marketing, driven by a reluctance to embrace technology.
The moment you feel intimidated by whatever new tool you are trying to use is the moment you shut yourself off to learning new skills.
As soon as we feel scared of something, our fight or flight response is instantly engaged. We either want to get angry and turn off the computer, or say 'it's just not for me' and walk away.
People who are good with tech aren't any smarter than you or me. They just have a different attitude.
They explore a new website or online tool as if they were reading a new book.
They don't subconsciously know which button is the one they need to click; instead, they follow their nose and are prepared to make mistakes, knowing that every time they do, they learn something.
Learning a new system is a process of discovery, like exploring a new city you've never been to before. After a while, you get so good at navigating new tools that you look like a tech-whizz to everyone else. But there really is no secret to it, other than not being scared of getting it wrong.
People who feel a high level of tech discomfort look for the very first moment of difficulty and take it as confirmation that they suck with technology.
Tech-savvy people, on the other hand, have a high level of self-efficacy...
In other words, it's that inner voice that says:
"I don't know how I'm going to get it done exactly, but I know I'll find a way..."
Self-efficacy is the quality that allows you to keep exploring when you feel uncomfortable. To keep pushing outside your comfort zone, knowing that something new could feel totally foreign to you right now, but so did everything at one point, right?
You are capable of learning new skills, no matter how set you are in your ways.
Are you ready to embrace the challenge and build your technology self-efficacy?
